Literature for Middle School Students in Former Socialist Countries
In some parts of the world--principally Japan, Western Europe, and North America--literature for young people provides a window on the lives of people of the same age facing similar problems, and also aids them in understanding people different from themselves with whom they may share space.
In most parts of the world, however, literature to be read by young people consists almost exclusively of folktales and classics-works that provide little guidance to contemporary life, and works with patriotic import that teachers feel uncomfortable interrogating.
CTI trainers include writers for young people and specialists in children’s literature. We have conducted several workshops so far in Romania for potential writers of realistic fiction for early adolescent readers.
Our work so far has been supported by the US Fulbright Program.
