Supporting the Open Society Institute’s Education Initiatives in Liberia

After fourteen years of civil war, Liberia elected President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf in 2005, and the beginning of longed-for stability made possible the reconstruction of school buildings and the rehabilitation of the educational system. George Soros made a personal commitment to “President Ellen” to help in this initiative, with a focus on assistance with the administrative infrastructure, and on teacher education.

The Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking program (RWCT) is the first teacher education effort offered in Liberia through the Open Society Institute’s Educational Support Project in London. Beginning in the summer of 2007, 60 teacher educators are being trained in RWCT, and 25 college and university faculty members are being oriented to Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum (CTAC), the tertiary level training offered by the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking program. The project may soon add a third strand, on literacy training, in a teacher education initiative that is scheduled to continue through 2010.

CTI has developed materials and provided trainers for these activities.
