Emergent Literacy and Critical Thinking in Argentina

Map of Argentina OSI’s Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking Project has contributed to a project to promote the habit of reading and prevent school failure in two areas of Argentina. We are providing training in emergent literacy and critical thinking for teachers in several marginalized schools in Buenos Aires and in the province of Misiones (in northeastern Argentina). The project is carried out in cooperation with the Argentine NGO, Fundación LEER, and the Open Society Institute, and it partners RWCT with OSI’s Step by Step program. RWCT provides guidebooks in Spanish containing instruments for assessing children’s emergent literacy, strategies for teaching beginning reading, and techniques for teaching reading comprehension.

RWCT trainers are consulting with the Fundación LEER in mounting a book flood project for grades K through 8 in Misiones. We have helped establish readability standards for the hundreds of book titles, a system for rotating books among classrooms, and a set of strategies for using the books in classrooms to promote literacy. A team of local trainers is being prepared to carry on the project in the region of Misiones, both in public schools and also through the local teacher training institute.

The project is supported by the Open Society Institute and the Fundación LEER. The RWCT and emergent literacy trainers are provided by CTI.
